Group Therapy

Child playing with Lego as part of group therapy.

Therapy for children can come in many forms and involve different methods depending on the needs of the child. While one-on-one play therapy can often be beneficial, group therapy situations can introduce problem solving, communication, and cooperation to children.

The goals and outcomes of group therapy for children are often different from adult group therapy. Children’s group therapy often focuses on developing and growing abilities such as communication, social skills, positive experimentation, and self-confidence. Through group therapy, children also learn how to form relationships with children of similar ages; all through playing and interacting in a facilitated environment.

We have different group therapy programs for children of different ages including programs for children as young as 4 years old and as old as 15. In this way, therapy groups and the activities within the groups can be tailored to suit each child’s age and developmental needs.

Stepping Stones

Stepping Stones is a Therapeutic Social Skills Group. This weekly 50-minute therapeutic group is designed for children ages 4–5 (Pre-schoolers) who could benefit from focused support in building social and emotional skills. Led by a Master’s-qualified play therapist, the sessions are kept small with a maximum of three children, allowing each child to receive individualised attention and engage in developmentally appropriate activities. Through a mix of child-led play, structured games, and creative exercises, children will practice and strengthen the following core skills:

  1. Emotional Regulation and Self-Awareness

  2. Communication and Peer Interaction

  3. Cooperation and Teamwork

  4. Empathy and Respect for Others

Throughout the group, the therapist will adapt activities to the interests and developmental levels of the children, ensuring that each child’s unique strengths are recognised and supported. This small group setting provides a safe and nurturing environment in which children can learn and experiment with new social skills, build self-confidence, and form positive peer relationships.
